Is a serpentine belt the same thing as a timing belt?
No. The serpentine belt runs on the outside of the engine and drives accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor. The timing belt, when present, is typically hidden behind a cover and keeps the engine’s internal valve timing synchronized. They wear differently, have different replacement intervals, and a failure of one doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem with the other.
Why does my belt squeal right after it rains?
Water temporarily reduces friction between a belt and its pulleys, which can expose slipping that a marginally worn belt was otherwise just barely getting away with in dry conditions. If the squeal disappears once everything dries out but returns with the next rain, it’s a sign the belt condition is already borderline rather than a rain-specific issue on its own.
